“I was so tired of doing what I was doing, and I wanted to follow my passion, to follow my dream and I was at a point in my life where I wanted to do what made me happy,” he said. “I just pushed forward with blinders on, I didn’t even think about it. I quit my job in July 2008, found a co-packer in late 2008 and had my sauce on the shelves by January 2009.”
Jim Barbour loved to try different kinds of barbecue when he dined out, and he had tasted the famous flavors of the south and southwest.
But where was Jersey barbecue, he wondered? He had eaten enough grilled foods growing up here when his family cooked together on weekends, that he believed the Garden State could be a contender in the barbecue world.
Fueled by that knowledge and his passion for food, he and his best friend and business partner Ryan Marrone set to work creating their own rubs and sauces. Contributing their talents were Barbour’s mother Jo Barbour, and his uncle Fred Lewis. Their products came together, and they began selling jars of their FunniBonz sauces and rubs at local farmers markets and specialty stores.
Since then, FunniBonz has become a fast growing brand reaching the shelves at stores like ShopRite, Stop&Shop, Whole Foods and Bed Bath & Beyond.
